Larry Craig announced in September that his pending resignation is on hold. Should he eventually resign, Idaho Governor Butch Otter will appoint a replacement, and the seat will be up for election next year. If he does not resign, many expect him to retire at the end of his term, creating an open seat. While Idaho is a GOP-heavy state, Democrats received a sizable boost in the 2006 midterms. Larry LaRocco, a businessman and Army veteran, is running an aggressive grassroots campaign for the Democratic nomination and was recently endorsed by Wes Clark.
