Max Baucus enters the 2008 race with a strong Democratic trend rushing through Montana. Baucus' impressive performance as Montana's senior senator has dissuaded Congressman Denny Rehberg from challenging him, leaving extreme right winger State Representative Michael Lange as the Republican candidate. Last cycle, on the heels of Democrat Brian Schweitzer capturing the governor's office, Jon Tester ousted incumbent Republican Conrad Burns. Senator Baucus is in this contest to win, and to prove it, he ended the second quarter with over $4.3 million in his re-election account. Any potential opponent will start the race at a decided disadvantage.
