Chuck Hagel has announced he will not run for re-election in 2008. Republican State Attorney General Jon Bruning has signaled his intention to run, and in September U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns resigned to run for the seat, though he has not officially announced his candidacy. Democrats are aggressively pursuing this seat and view it as a strong pickup opportunity. Former Senator Bob Kerrey, Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey, and former Congressional candidate Scott Kleeb have expressed interest in the race. In 2006, Senator Ben Nelson defeated his Republican opponent, who spent $13 million of his own money, because of his effectiveness and independence. The Democratic nominee will reflect that same winning strategy.
