After the death of Senator Craig Thomas, Wyoming's governor appointed John Barrasso to fill the vacancy. Because of this special appointment, Wyoming will hold contests for both Barrasso's seat along with Senator Mike Enzi's seat in 2008. With less than $200,000 in the bank at the end of 2006, Enzi has a lot of ground to cover to prepare for a 2008 bid. Democrats are working hard to recruit a strong challenger for both of these contests. While the state trends red in its federal elections, Democrats have won six of the last eight gubernatorial elections in the state.
