Democrats are criticizing Sen. Jim Talent for trying to distance himself from the Bush administration during a recent TV interview.

In an appearance Wednesday on MSNBC, Talent was asked why none of his campaign ads this year mention President Bush.

Talent responded: "I don't believe when I ran in 2002 that I mentioned the president."

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee pounced on the statement, pointing out that Talent campaigned five times with Bush during the 2002 Senate race and featured footage of Talent and Bush in at least one campaign ad and on his Web site.

McCaskill has taken every opportunity during her campaign to link Talent to President Bush, whose popularity has been at record lows in recent polls.

Talent spokesman Rich Chrismer said: "Sen. Talent has always talked about his record and his opponent's record in his ads."
