U.S. Sen. Max Baucus has amassed a record-breaking $7.4 million in campaign donations so far, records show, raising an average of more than $15,000 every day of the last three months. The figure, which includes all donations received up to Sept. 30, is more than $1 million above than the $6 million Baucus raised in all of 2002, his last election.
“Max is on course to build the strongest grassroots, people-to-people campaign Montana has ever seen,” said spokesman Barrett Kaiser.
Baucus released the numbers Monday. The records show that the five-time senator raised $1.4 million between July and the end of September and has $5.4 million left in his campaign war chest.
Baucus spent more than $300,000 the past three months. Kaiser said most of that money went to building up his campaign and paying for fundraisers.
The $7.4 million is more than any other Montana candidate has ever raised at this stage in the campaign, Kaiser said. The sum averages $23 for every vote cast in the 2002 Senate race.
