U.S. Senate candidates Ben Nelson and Pete Ricketts sharpened their attacks Sunday as the two exchanged blows over illegal immigration and Social Security in their second debate.
Ricketts, who was more aggressive than in the first debate, accused Sen. Nelson of telling "outright lies" about his views on Social Security. He also called Nelson an "ineffective" senator.
For his part, Nelson accused Ricketts of supporting "amnesty lite" for illegal immigrants. He also referred to his Republican opponent as a "blind party loyalist."
A former Ameritrade executive, Ricketts is attempting to unseat Nelson, a Democrat who is seeking a second term in the U.S. Senate.
The two, who are both multimillionaires, already have broken spending records this campaign season. The two are expected to exceed more than $15 million in combined spending by the time the polls close on Nov. 7.
