Nelson avoids harsh words - for now

Kicking off his campaign for reelection over the weekend, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson came out swinging.

Well, not exactly.

Despite months of being dubbed by Republican challenger Katherine Harris as Florida's ''do-nothing liberal senator,'' Nelson chose to let others do most of the Harris-bashing as he pressed his case for why he should be returned to Washington.

The freshman senator said he'll concentrate on legislating.

''I've got a lot to do,'' Nelson said in an interview before a Democratic Party unity event in Tampa. "The politics will take care of itself.''

That said, the weekend marked the official start of Nelson's campaign. He shared a Tampa stage Friday night with the party's slate of candidates, including gubernatorial nominee Jim Davis and chief financial officer candidate Alex Sink, and dashed off to address the Florida State Conference of the NAACP in Orlando later that night.
