When former President Bill Clinton encouraged Democrats to support Claire McCaskill for the U.S. Senate yesterday, he said they shouldn't be "hateful" or "partisan."

"Simply connect the dots," Clinton suggested to about 1,500 people who filled a theater.

And in a 35-minute speech, Clinton methodically connected dots that joined U.S. Sen. Jim Talent, the Republican incumbent, to President George W. Bush.

Without mentioning Talent by name, Clinton focused on economic issues that Democrats have used as campaign themes for generations: wages, health care and money for public education. While worker productivity, corporate profits and economic growth have all increased over the past five years, he said, wages have been stagnant and more people have fallen below the poverty line.

Clinton said Republicans favored tax cuts for the wealthy, and he brought up the estate tax cut supported by Talent.
