Former President Jimmy Carter on Monday was again pinch-hitting for his ailing son, Democratic senatorial candidate Jack Carter, at campaign stops around town.

The elder Carter made two appearances on Monday for his son, who was still being treated for severe colitis in the intensive care unit of Summerlin Hospital Medical Center.

"He's doing much better," the 81-year-old said of his son during a Monday afternoon appearance at Henderson's Paseo Verde Library which was co-sponsored by the Retired Public Employees of Nevada. "He'll be back on the campaign trail very shortly."

Jack Carter became ill after a trip to Atlanta for the Sept. 2 birth of his first grandchild, the elder Carter said.

"It developed into a very serious problem," he said.

But, he added, "he's doing quite well and responding quite well to all of the treatment."

Jack Carter, 59, has been hospitalized since Thursday.

On Monday, his press secretary, Jay Jones, said it would be a day or two before doctors know when the first-time candidate will be released from the hospital.
