Rising star to help Byrd

Before Illinois Sen. Barack Obama speaks to the annual Jefferson-Jackson Day crowd of Democrats in Charleston Sept. 23, couples willing to cough up $5,000 can spend a few hours with him - and U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va. - at a Byrd campaign fundraiser.

Obama, a Democrat elected in 2004, is considered a rising star in the national party and the J-J Day dinner tickets have sold out. Ned Rose, chairman of the Friends of Robert C. Byrd Committee, and his wife, Barbara, will host the 1:30 to 3 p.m. fundraiser at their 4 Wildacre Road house, said Mark Ferrell, a Byrd campaign spokesman.

"We expect we'll have a roomful up at Ned and Barbara's," said Ferrell.

Invitations were mailed out Friday, so Ferrell has no idea how many people will attend.

"People are recognizing Barack Obama is a comer," he said. "He's getting a lot of attention. He and Byrd both share rock-star status."

The $2,500-a person price could be considered a bargain. Byrd's GOP challenger, Morgantown multi-millionaire John Raese, dumped another $279,000 of his own money into his campaign hopper Friday, triggering another part of the "millionaire's clause." That Federal Election Commission regulation allows candidates to ask for more than the $2,100 maximum donation per person when their opponent spends over a certain level.
