U.S. Rep. Bernard Sanders said thanks but no thanks to Vermont Democrats on Wednesday, turning down the party's nomination for U.S. Senate a day after winning handily in a primary.
Meanwhile, state and national Republican leaders' embrace of their party's U.S. Senate nominee, Richard Tarrant, appeared to be an awkward one.
Party leaders called the post-primary dichotomy a reflection of the singular features of this year's race for the U.S. Senate seat of Sen. James Jeffords, who is retiring.
Those features? Sanders' once-an-independent, always-an-independent stance, and millionaire Tarrant's ability to get by without much help from his party.
According to still-unofficial totals, Sanders captured 95 percent of the vote in Tuesday's five-way Democratic primary. In it, Sanders carried the party's endorsement even though he made it known he would run as an independent - not a Democrat - in the Nov. 7 general election.
