At least John Spencer can say he hasn't been ignored.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's re-election campaign took aim at Spencer yesterday, objecting to a claim the GOP nominee made Wednesday night about never having run a negative campaign.

"If comparing Senator Clinton to Osama bin Laden is what John Spencer's 'positive' campaign looks like, what do his negative campaigns consist of?" Clinton adviser Howard Wolfson said in a statement e-mailed to reporters yesterday.

"Given John Spencer's history, he probably doesn't consider a campaign negative until he threatens to murder his opponent," Wolfson said, referring to an instance during Spencer's tenure as mayor of Yonkers when he jokingly threatened to kill the governor and a federal judge.

Also, one of Spencer's TV ads placed Clinton's picture next to bin Laden's image.

"It's unfortunately very clear that John Spencer is determined to run a negative, personal campaign against Senator Clinton," Wolfson added.
