Kyl, Pederson trading shots in Senate race

Already the most expensive political race in state history, Arizona's heavyweight battle between U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl and Democratic challenger Jim Pederson is beginning to live up to its early billing.

Pederson, a shopping-mall developer who has put more than $8 million of his own fortune into the race, is gaining ground on Kyl, closing to within 10 points, according recent polls. The margin has tightened as the campaign has grown increasingly personal over the past month. Both sides have launched multiple televised attack ads, and both sides are crying foul over their accuracy.

National political prognosticators still rate the race as leaning toward a Kyl victory. But Pederson insists that, with early voting starting Oct. 5 and the general election only two months away, he has Kyl right where he wants him.

"We're going to take it to Jon Kyl," Pederson said. "He's got a voting record that he has to defend. Immigration is out of control. The health care system is unworkable. Schools need fixing. And I have a vision of Arizona that envisions a lot more than he is doing."

Kyl's camp was equally confident, saying that any movement in the polls is the result of negative campaigning. Campaign spokesman Jake Logan said Kyl has tried to run an "issues-based" campaign but has had to hit back recently because his camp believes Pederson has unfairly and inaccurately questioned Kyl's integrity
