Every which way they turn, Sen. Jim Talent and state Auditor Claire McCaskill face voters' unease and anger about the war in Iraq.

"There's no winning that," said Nell Cowden, 58, a retiree, as she waited in the buffet line last month at a Democratic dinner in Maryville, Mo., featuring McCaskill. It doesn't make sense, she said, "to throw more money and lives" into the effort.

Talent says he frequently hears from voters who "want us to win and want us to win faster than we're winning. And they're frustrated that we're not doing that."

But Missourians looking for a dramatic new direction on Iraq from the two candidates competing for the U.S. Senate seat may not be happy with what either Talent or McCaskill has to say.

To be sure, Talent, the Republican incumbent, and McCaskill, his Democratic challenger, have sharply different positions on the best course forward in Iraq, as well as whether it was a good idea to strike in the first place. Indeed, Iraq may be the strongest point of disagreement on a broad range of foreign policy questions.
