In Montana's contentious U.S. Senate race, few issues separate Republican Sen. Conrad Burns and Democratic challenger Jon Tester more than the war in Iraq.
Burns steadfastly supports President Bush's strategy in Iraq, although he believes the U.S. and its allies need more troops on the ground.
Tester, on the other hand, has questioned the administration's strategy since November 2005, when he first called on President Bush to come up with a plan and schedule for the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Iraq.
Borrowing from the GOP's national playbook, Burns has accused Tester of favoring a "cut-and-run" approach in Iraq.
"He is cut-and-run," Burns said. "He wants a plan. What's his plan? What direction would you like to take us in? Does he understand the consequences of losing?"
Tester disputed Burns' label, saying, "That's not been my position. We need a plan, a plan that works, and (to) bring our troops home. Develop the plan and focus on the war on terror."
