Two Democratic congressional hopefuls pressed the flesh in three Cochise County communities Friday with a message that the next two months of campaigning will be critical to the party.

Jim Pederson, running against Republican U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, and Gabrielle Giffords, who is facing Republican Randy Graf to fill the Congressional District 8 seat being vacated by retiring 11-term Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Kolbe, spoke during a stop near Grassy Park in Old Bisbee of a need to have Congress return to Democratic control. "This is a very important election. It will influence Arizona for the next 20 to 30 years," Pederson said.

With the party faithful's support and by reaching out to Republicans, independents and other nonaffiliated people, Arizona may see a congressional delegation that is evenly split, with four the Democrats in the House of Representatives and one in the Senate, the two Democratic hopefuls said.

Pederson believes two more of the state?s eight congressional districts, including District 8, will go Democratic.

With an evenly split congressional delegation, there will be a return to negotiations around the table to discuss issues important to Arizona, he said. He said the Republican-controlled Congress is not doing things the people want done.
