A former United States assistant attorney general easily won the Massachusetts Democratic primary for governor on Tuesday, fending off two challengers to represent a party that is trying to break a 16-year Republican hold on the office.

With 94 percent of the state’s precincts reporting, the nominee, Deval Patrick, who was assistant attorney general for civil rights in the Clinton administration, won 49 percent of the vote, far ahead Chris Gabrieli, a venture capitalist, who won 27 percent, and Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly, who won 23 percent. The primary was the most expensive in state history, with the candidates spending a total of nearly $25 million.

In Washington State, Senator Maria Cantwell won the Democratic primary for Senate, and Mike McGavick, a former insurance executive, won the Republican Senate primary, both by large margins.

In the November election in Massachusetts, Mr. Patrick, 50, who has never held office, will face the Republican nominee, Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey; Christy Mihos, the independent candidate; and Grace Ross, the Green Party candidate. If elected, Mr. Patrick would be the state’s first black governor. Ms. Healey would be the first woman elected to the job.
