Sitting behind the counter of the Soddy Bible and Church Supplies store Friday afternoon, proprietor Frank Copeland admitted he hasn't devoted much attention to the Volunteer State's hotly contested Senate race. He's been focused instead on fighting a November referendum that would allow restaurants in this beer-only town to serve liquor by the drink.

In the contest between Rep. Harold Ford Jr. (D) and former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker (R) - a critical part of the math for Democrats to win a majority in the chamber this fall - Copeland said he is undecided about whom he will vote for.

But he does know he likes what he sees in Ford's newest campaign commercial, which features the 36-year-old Congressman in a church sanctuary talking about faith.

"I like his new ads," said Copeland, a retired power plant employee who took over the bible and church supply store as a hobby six years ago. "As a Christian, I'm definitely going to look at moral issues before other things."

Soddy-Daisy, a town of almost 12,000 located halfway between Chattanooga and Dayton, home of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, isn't traditionally fertile territory for Democrats. But Ford must appeal to and convert voters like Copeland across the state to have any shot at winning the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Bill Frist (R).
