In his campaign for the U.S. Senate, Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele has launched a new TV ad that has Democrats complaining.

Critics said the commercial puts style over substance, fails to discuss the issues, hides Steele's ties to President George W. Bush's administration and tries to blur party lines. In Maryland, registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 2-to-1 margin.

Steele's ads are aimed at getting voters to cross over, News4's Chris Gordon reported. Steele shows he has a sense of humor. He shrugs, mugs and poses with a puppy.

The ad campaign was Steele's own idea.

The Democratic candidate for the Senate seat, Ben Cardin, criticized the ad campaign for lacking substance.

On Tuesday, Cardin challenged Steele to a series of debates -- two a week for the next seven weeks. Members of the Steele campaign said it has already accepted one debate to be held on NBC's "Meet the Press" in October. A Steele spokesman told News4 that they called the Cardin campaign to discuss debates after last week's primary, left a voice message and sent a letter, but have not received a reply.
