The hotly contested Senate race between Republican incumbent Mike DeWine and Democratic U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown is about even, according to two polls released Wednesday.

A Quinnipiac University poll found that 45 percent of likely Ohio voters favored Brown, while 44 percent backed DeWine and 11 percent were undecided.

An Ohio Poll, conducted by the University of Cincinnati, of likely voters showed Brown with 51 percent to 47 percent for DeWine, within the poll's margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percent.

The race between DeWine, a two-term senator, and Brown, who represents a Cleveland-area House district, is considered crucial for both parties as 33 Senate seats are up for grabs, with Democrats needing to pick up six seats to take control.

The Ohio Poll also released results of its first survey of likely voters in Ohio's governor's race, showing U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, a Democrat, leading Republican candidate Ken Blackwell, 50 percent to 38 percent and 7 percent undecided. That's closer than the 21-point lead Strickland had in a Quinnipiac poll released Tuesday.
