U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl's words are coming back to haunt him. In his most recent television ad, Kyl stands with six Arizona sheriffs against the backdrop of the Sonoran Desert.

The sheriffs, who come from both major parties, repeat again and again that Kyl's Democratic challenger, Jim Pederson, "supported amnesty," which is why they say they support Kyl.

The commercial cites an April radio interview in which Pederson referred to 1986 immigration legislation as "the last effective measure that we had." That legislation has widely been criticized as a failure, providing amnesty for more than 2.7 million illegal entrants while doing little to secure the U.S.-Mexico border.

The commercial has one problem: As a congressional candidate, Kyl supported that same 1986 legislation, according to an article from the time.
