Sen. Jim Talent, a Republican, and his Democratic opponent, state Auditor Claire McCaskill, hold sharply different views on a variety of national security topics, including how to protect the nation from another terrorist attack, what rules should guide the surveillance of potential terrorists and whether captured terrorism suspects should have fewer rights at trial than ordinary criminal suspects.

Here, Talent and McCaskill explain their views on national security issues:

Associated Press: Two years after the independent Sept. 11 Commission issued its report on how to protect the country from another attack, Congress has not approved a majority of its recommendations. What does Congress need to do to help prevent future terrorist attacks here?

Talent: The government has implemented or is in the process of implementing 37 of the 39 recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. And the Senate recently passed the Port Security bill which represents action on 38 of the 39 recommendations.

We need to do two things to keep America safe: First, secure the border, including security fencing, which Claire McCaskill opposes. Second, continue to improve our human intelligence capabilities in cooperation with allies like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq.
