A new poll shows Democratic U.S. Senate challenger Jim Pederson closing the gap on Republican incumbent Jon Kyl.
A poll by SurveyUSA, which will be released Tuesday night, shows Pederson trailing Kyl by only 5 percentage points -- 48 percent to 43 percent.
That spread is tighter than most previous polls and comes after a barrage of advertisements by Pederson faulting Kyl for failure to support a minimum wage hike and for being too cozy with oil and pharmaceutical companies.
SurveyUSA also shows Scottsdale Republican Congressman J.D. Hayworth leading former Tempe Mayor and Democratic challenger Harry Mitchell by a 52 percent to 40 percent margin.
Pederson's campaign welcomed the tight poll numbers saying it shows the Phoenix area shopping center developer is making progress.
Kyl downplayed the results in a conference call with reporters. Campaign representatives said they expected the race to tighten especially considering Pederson has put more than $8 million of his own money into the contest.
Kyl said he is not cozy with the oil and drug companies that contribute to his campaign. He points to a number of votes against industry-backed measures.
