We continue to be disappointed by U.S. Senate candidate Bob Corker's reluctance to face his opponent Rep. Harold Ford Jr. in open debate. The latest instance is Corker's refusal to appear live with Ford on the Larry Kudlow show in CNBC.

The Republican candidate in one of the nation's most important political races must be willing to stand side-by-side with his opponent and face the tough questions. To his credit, the Democrat Ford has accepted every invitation to do so. In a nutshell, Corker is short-changing voters.

This is especially true considering the blizzard of childish press releases coming from both the Corker and the Ford camps. The daily barrage of he-said, she-said, and do you know what so-and-so did 18 years ago is dispiriting to anyone genuinely concerned about the future of this U.S. Senate seat.

Corker continues to avoid face-to-face meetings with Ford on television and in campaign debates, including a televised debate proposed by The Jackson Sun. One only can wonder why.

To us, the candidates appear to be worthy opponents with much to offer. That is a plus for voters, to be sure. But the best way to differentiate between the two involves more than canned speeches and carefully worded press releases. Voters want to see the candidates side-by-side. They want to see the candidates field hard questions. They want to hear the candidates talk about the future.
