Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Jon Tester whistle-stopped through Choteau last Friday, making the obligatory stop at the local newspaper, visiting with hospital officials and holding a "listening" session at a cafe.
Accompanied by campaign staffers and a Lee Newspapers political writer covering his race, Tester brought his message of challenge and change to Choteau before heading out for more campaigning in Conrad.
Tester, who is running against three-term Republican Sen. Conrad Burns, said during a campaign interview that his most significant assets as a candidate are his leadership skills and personal honesty. "Honesty is a baseline quality that we all expect in the private sector or the public sector," he said.
He said also he thinks "the country is in dire need of honest leadership" and he would bring both those qualities to the U.S. Senate as Montana's new senator.
Tester, who turned 50 last month, was born in Havre and raised on a farm near Big Sandy in Chouteau County. He earned a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Great Falls and taught music at Big Sandy Public Schools before returning to farming full-time in the 1980s. He has converted the farm to an organic operation, growing wheat, barley, lentils, peas, millet, buckwheat, alfalfa and hay.
