A second poll released this week shows Democratic real estate developer Jim Pederson gaining on Republican U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl in the U.S. Senate race.
Pederson has put more than $8 million of his own money into his effort. The campaign includes TV ads bolstering his name identification and criticizing Kyl for being too cozy with Big Oil and the Bush administration and for supporting tax cuts for the rich and opposing a minimum wage hike. Kyl also has been running ads, but not at the same rate.
A Rasmussen Reports poll released Wednesday gives Kyl a 50 percent to 39 percent lead over Pederson. A SurveyUSA poll that came out Tuesday night has it even closer with only a 5 percentage point advantage for Kyl -- 48 percent to 43 percent. Three other recent polls put Kyl's lead between 6 and 10 percentage points.
The Kyl campaign acknowledges that Pederson's ad blitz has helped close the gap but argues some of the television spots are inaccurate. Pederson's camp defends the ads, saying the tightening polls numbers show the Democrat's efforts are starting resonate with voters.
Political consultants said the Republican incumbent needs to fire back at Pederson and the challenger needs to stay on the offensive to make the case for change.
