Two candidates locked in a tight U.S. Senate race agree on hot-button environmental issues such as oil drilling in the Alaskan wilderness, but an environmental group says Democratic U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez's federal track record sets him apart.
The New Jersey chapter of the Sierra Club announced its endorsement for the former Hudson County congressman over State Sen. Tom Kean Jr., R-Westfield, on Wednesday.
The backing sought by both campaigns coincided with a new Quinnipiac University poll showing the race to be a statistical dead heat less than two months away from the election.
"It's not enough to talk, you have to lead, and Bob Menendez is a proven leader," said Jeff Tittel, the chapter's director, who added that Menendez is stronger on issues such as global warming and other priorities for the group.
Menendez described Kean as "foot soldier" who would not stand up to President George W. Bush and the Republicans who now control Congress.
"My opponent says he will do the right thing, but he has shown he will do and say anything to get elected," Menendez said. "He simply does not have the experience nor the intestinal fortitude to stand up to George Bush."
