In September 2000, Maria Cantwell enjoyed one of the few advantages of an unelected U.S. Senate challenger candidate: no sworn duties and lots of time to campaign.

The Democrat defeated her election primary opponent and sent a campaign staffer dressed as Pac-Man to Republican Sen. Slade Gorton's Bellevue office to make light of him accepting money from political action committees.

Now she's the one being targeted by a challenger, though Mike McGavick hasn't sent a cartoon character to her office yet.

The Senate will likely be in session until the first week in October, and Cantwell has votes to cast and work to do, which has left her little time to campaign this September, her campaign aides said. Cross-country flight time and fundraising needs so she can pay for TV ads also take their toll.

"It's harder," she said, sitting in a drama club dressing room at Bellevue High School earlier this month. "We've had to consolidate what we do in a very short period of time."

A few minutes earlier, Cantwell had joined Democratic Sens. Patty Murray of Washington and Barbara Boxer of California in front of about 300 people at a rally to pump up the party faithful and champion a bread-and-butter list of issues, including job creation, affordable college and energy independence.
