Democrats set to storm campus

Two of the biggest names in the Democratic Party are set to appear on the campus this week, as Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Barack Obama (D-Ill) attend rallies to show support for Maryland Democratic candidates.
Their appearances highlight the state's emergence as what could be a contested battleground in this November's elections, as Democrats across the country attempt to regain control of Congress.
The shift represents an historic shift for Maryland: not in 40 years has the state, which leans heavily Democratic, seen a Republican governor up for re-election, and it has been 20 years since a U.S. Senate race here lacks an incumbent. Although the gubernatorial race is viewed as important on a national scale, it pales in comparison to the senatorial race, which sports a well-funded Republican challenger in Lt. Gov. Michael Steele.
Clinton and Obama, each mentioned as potential presidential candidates in 2008, will join such well-known Maryland Democrats as Sen. Paul Sarbanes, whose retirement leaves the seat open, Sen. Barbara Mikulski and U.S. congressman Steny Hoyer in announcing their endorsements for Democratic senatorial candidate Ben Cardin and gubernatorial candidate Martin O'Malley for governor.
