It was hot on the shooting range west of Phoenix, and a crew member was reflecting sunlight into his face. But that isn't why Iraq war veteran Pete Granato looks mad as he holds up an armor-plated vest to the camera and says, "Senator Jon Kyl voted against giving our troops this."

The ad was funded by Vote Vets, a political action committee led by veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The anti-Kyl ad is one of several versions Granato filmed that summer day at the Buckeye Hills Shooting Range, chosen because it looked like Iraq. The ad hasn't aired here yet but still has Kyl concerned.

Granato filmed a version about every Republican U.S. senator running in a contested re-election race. Donors to the PAC help decide where the ad runs next.

The ad is effective because it is simple.

Granato dresses two dummies in vests, one matching what he was issued in Iraq, the other with protective plates. He fires bullets at the dummies and opens up the vests. The armor-plated mannequin is undamaged. The other dummy shows four body shots. "It's a matter of life or death," Granato says in the ad.
