Democratic U.S. Senate challenger Jim Webb made another foray into Republican territory Sunday, speaking to a roomful of supporters during a fundraiser at Staunton's Mill Street Grill.

Webb is reaching out to rural and moderate Virginia voters in his quest to unseat incumbent U.S. Sen. George Allen in November.

"There is a tremendous potential for Democrats to bring people back," said Webb, who trails incumbent George Allen by 4 points in the latest Mason-Dixon poll. "They were never comfortable with the other side on social justice and economic fairness."

Webb specified that he is referring to Democrats who supported former President Ronald Reagan on issues such as national security.

Local Democrats concede that Waynesboro, Augusta County and Staunton are still Republican strong.
