Immigration, Iraq and tax reform took center stage Monday when U.S. Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., and his GOP challenger, Temple University law professor Jan C. Ting, squared off in a joint appearance at an Academy of Lifelong Learning program at the University of Delaware campus on Pennsylvania Avenue near Wilmington.

Ting, who spoke first after winning a coin toss, seemed to distance himself from the Bush administration early in his presentation by telling the audience, "I don't think staying the course [in Iraq] is a strategy."

He added quickly that he doesn't think the Democrats in Congress have a strategy for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq either. "We can't wait two more years for a change in policy," he said. "We have to find a way out that doesn't betray those people."

Ting seemed to further distance himself from the White House, noting that five years after the 9/11 attacks on the United States he is concerned that the country does not have control of its borders.

President Bush, under whose authority the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency operates, recently took steps to beef up security.
