This 30-second spot by U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns' campaign began airing last weekend in Montana. It was produced by McCarthy Marcus Hennings of Washington, D.C.
Ad content: It features Senate Republican Leader Bob Keenan of Bigfork talking about Tester's record in the Senate. The ad also has shots of Tester against a black background and closes with a shot of Keenan and Burns walking together.
Script: Keenan: "I ran against Conrad Burns in the primary and served eight years in the Montana Senate with Jon Tester. The Tester you see on TV is all conservative talk. But he votes with the liberal left because he is one of them. Tester has a record of raising your taxes. He even co-sponsored a bill to increase income taxes on people making as little as $24,000 per year. Make no mistake, we can't afford the real Jon Tester. Conrad Burns is the best choice for Montana in the U.S. Senate."
Analysis: Tester has voted for some significant tax bills in his Senate career. Yet some of the bills cited by the Burns' campaign as documentation for this ad are not a tax increase, and in fact lowered some taxes. Also, describing a 2005 bill co-sponsored by Tester as "increasing income taxes on people making as little as $24,000 a year" is, at best, misleading.
