Ken Shelton says it's going to be tough to find people to corroborate his story.

"George Allen has a very long reach," Shelton, a Hendersonville, N.C., radiologist said Tuesday. "People will have difficulty coming forward. I accept that."

Larry Sabato is quite willing to corroborate Shelton's story but can only do so second-hand.

"I'm confident in the reliable sources who have contacted me," said Sabato, a political scientist at the University of Virginia and Allen's classmate. "These are members of the Class of '74 I've heard from over the past several weeks."

For now, Shelton is on an island as the single named source in a Salon.com story released Sunday that said that Allen, who is in the race of his life to keep his Senate seat from Democratic challenger James Webb, routinely referred to African-Americans as "niggers" while at the university.
