Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Dale Groutage said he favors rewriting the federal Endangered Species Act to give ranchers more control over wolves and grizzly bears.
"Rewrite that law to help our ranchers," Groutage said Wednesday.
If elected, he would gather a coalition of Western senators to change the law so that wolves and grizzly bears could be shot outside the boundaries of national parks, he said.
Groutage said his opponent in the November general election, incumbent Republican Sen. Craig Thomas, has failed the state by not leading an effort to rewrite the act.
But Cameron Hardy, spokesman for Thomas, said Thomas did gather a group of senators from Western and other states to propose legislation rewriting the Endangered Species Act.
However, Democrats in the Senate have blocked the proposal, Hardy said.
