While many Minnesotans say gasoline costs have caused them financial hardships this year, few see fuel prices as the biggest campaign issue, according to a St. Paul Pioneer Press-Minnesota Public Radio poll published Thursday.

Half of the Minnesotans polled said fuel costs had been a financial hardship, and three-fifths said higher gas prices had forced them to cut back on driving since the start of the year.

But the Pioneer Press-MPR survey showed only 1 percent of Minnesotans considered gas prices the most important issue in the U.S. Senate race. The issue was overshadowed by the war in Iraq, health care, the war on terror, taxes and government spending.

The poll surveyed 625 registered Minnesota voters Sept. 18-20. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points

Half of those polled said they vacationed closer to home this year, and half said they considered buying a car with better mileage. But only 1 in 4 said they had switched to other ways of getting around, such as biking, walking or mass transit.
