A new poll shows an old story for Katherine Harris. She still trails incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson by 18 points - almost exactly the position she was in more than a year ago.

Nelson continues to lead in every region of the state, according to the new survey by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, done for the Tribune and other news agencies.

Statewide, 53 percent of likely voters support Nelson, 35 percent back Harris, 2 percent are for other candidates and 10 percent are undecided, said Mason-Dixon pollster Brad Coker.

Harris has launched TV ads and tried to portray Nelson as an extreme liberal in recent weeks, but commentators have noted that many of her charges are exaggerated or misleading.

In any case, Harris' attacks seem to have had little effect.

Nelson's statewide name recognition and favorable ratings were relatively unchanged from a July Mason-Dixon poll. Statewide, 46 percent have a favorable opinion of him and only 14 percent unfavorable.
