Democratic Senate nominee Harold Ford Jr. continued his efforts to woo moderates as former Virginia Governor Mark Warner made a trip on the congressman's behalf to Nashville on Sunday.
"What I see in Harold Ford is a leader who will bring an independent voice to the Senate," Warner said outside LP Field before the Titans-Cowboys game. "If the president's right, he'll stand with him, but if the president's wrong, he'll be willing to do his constitutional duty."
Warner won the Virginia governor's race in 2001 and helped fellow Democrat Tom Kaine win the seat last November in a state that has voted Republican in the last 10 presidential elections.
"It sends a message to people that there's a sensible, Democratic model that works," Ford said of his political ally.
"Warner continues to offer good ideas and forward thinking. That's what we need more in politics."
Warner, who is typically labeled as a centrist, has been mentioned as a possible candidate for president in 2008, but he shied away from talk of a possible campaign.
"I haven't made any final decision about what, if anything, I'm going to do," Warner said. "What I'm trying to do right now is help Harold Ford Jr. take this Senate seat."
