Democratic challenger Jon Tester is leading Republican U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns by a 47 percent to 40 percent margin, a new Gazette State Poll shows.
Ten percent of the voters are undecided, while 3 percent said they would vote for Libertarian candidate Stan Jones if the election, set for Nov. 7, were held today.
The telephone poll, taken by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research of Washington, D.C., Tuesday through Thursday, surveyed 625 registered Montana voters who said they regularly vote in state elections. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
With just more than five weeks left before the Nov. 7 election, Montana's Senate race is among the most closely watched in the nation. National political and party observers have ranked Burns as one of the most vulnerable Republican incumbents. Tester, a farmer from Big Sandy and president of the Montana Senate, is trying to unseat Burns, a former agricultural broadcaster, auctioneer and Yellowstone County commissioner. Burns is seeking a fourth Senate term.
Brad Coker, managing director of Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, said the poll shows that Burns faces "big problems" in his re-election bid.
