Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell has a 10-point lead over Republican challenger Mike McGavick five weeks before the election, according to a new McClatchy-MSNBC poll.
The poll showed sharp dissatisfaction with President Bush, his Iraq policies and Congress among Washington voters. It also showed deep concern about the future of the country, with nearly 60 percent of those surveyed believing it was headed in the wrong direction.
While Iraq was the top concern with the November election looming, there was little consensus about what to do.
Almost one-third of those surveyed said it was time to pull out, another third said U.S. troop levels should remain the same or be increased, and the rest were not sure what to do or believe some forces should be withdrawn.
In the Senate race, Cantwell was at 50 percent and former insurance company executive McGavick at 40 percent, with 9 percent undecided. Nearly half of those polled had a favorable opinion of Cantwell. She is seeking a second term six years after she was elected by 2,229 votes in what was then one of the closest races in state history.
McGavick's approval rating stood at 30 percent, but even after months of nonstop campaigning 45 percent of those surveyed had no opinion about him or didn?t recognize him.
