New Jersey's top two Democrats blasted the campaign tactics of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tom Kean Jr. on Sunday, three days after potentially damaging information emerged about his opponent, Sen. Robert Menendez.
Governor Corzine and U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg said Kean had resorted to underhanded tactics that hit an "unprecedented low" in the pantheon of political campaigns, rather than address issues important to the state's voters.
The two Democrats, at a press conference in Newark, said they were incensed by reports Saturday that Kean's campaign had consulted with former Hudson County Executive Robert Janiszewski, who is in a Kentucky federal prison for taking more than $100,000 in bribes.
Kean's campaign acknowledged Sunday that Janiszewski sent an e-mail to an investigative "subcontractor" working on the campaign, Chris Lyons. The communique reportedly identified Hudson County political players who might provide information against Menendez.
Lautenberg called Kean's campaign "gutter politics" and the "ugliest, trashiest campaign that one can see."
Added Corzine: "This pattern of trying to destroy an individual so you avoid talking about what is important in a United States Senate campaign must stop."
