The candidates seeking Maryland's U-S Senate seat meet tonight at the Baltimore Urban League for their first debate.

Democratic Congressman Ben Cardin and Republican Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele will be there, along with independent Kevin Zeese. The candidates are seeking the open Senate seat of retiring Senator Paul Sarbanes.

They'll have two hours to explain to voters what they would do in the Senate. Likely topics for debate will be how to proceed in Iraq and ways to expand access to health insurance.

It will be the first meeting between Cardin and Steele. They'll meet again at least one more time. Next month, the pair will appear in a nationally televised debate on N-B-C's "Meet the Press."
