The details of a U.S. Senate debate in Great Falls are coming into focus, and if past is prologue, we can look forward to a vigorous exchange.

The one-hour event will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20 - 2 1/2 weeks before the Nov. 7 election - in the auditorium at C.M. Russell High School. It is sponsored by the Great Falls Area Chamber of Commerce.

The stage will be shared by incumbent Conrad Burns, a Republican seeking his fourth term, and Jon Tester, a Democrat, Big Sandy farmer and state Senate president.

For the first time in recent memory, Great Falls television will carry the event live, on KRTV locally and statewide on its Montana's News Station network.

That's good, because it appears the Great Falls debate will be the season's last head-to-head meeting between the candidates.

Others are scheduled next Monday in Bozeman; Oct. 12 in Helena; and Oct .17 in Billings.

Because of the current national political climate, the balance of power in Congress is in play in this election. A Democratic shift could end an extended run of Republican control.
