A day after new polling indicated a 1 percent lead over his opponent, former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker in the race for U.S. Senate, Congressman Harold Ford Jr., D-Memphis, was back on the trail touting his campaign’s growing momentum.
Mason-Dixon Polling & Research of Washington conducted the statewide survey of 625 likely voters Sept. 25-27. Ford held a 43 percent to 42 percent edge, with 14 percent of the respondents undecided.
"What that poll says is we can win," Ford said during a meeting with the Johnson City Press editorial board Monday. "The voters are on our side and are wanting the race to get back to the issues and get off the negative campaigning."
Ford and Corker are competing to replace retiring Sen. Bill Frist.
According to Ford, campaign rhetoric took a downward turn after the Labor Day holiday with Corker denouncing Ford's strength when it came to issues like immigration and national security. Ford, who has proposed such measures as shutting down our borders for 45 days in order to better figure out who is in the country legally, says he has tried to stay focused on the issues.
"I wasn't going to let them make me into something that I'm not," Ford said.
