U.S. Senate hopeful Harold Ford Jr. outlined his vision for the nation's future during a campaign stop Monday at King College.

Ford, a Democrat and U.S. representative from Memphis, faces Republican Bob Corker in the race to replace Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who is retiring. A new Mason-Dixon poll shows the two are virtually even heading into the Nov. 7 general election.

During a 30-minute speech before about 250 in the college chapel, Ford emphasized cutting U.S. dependence on foreign oil, lessening the tax burden for middle-class Americans, improving education and health care. He mentioned his faith several times and said the country's leaders need to do a better job "leading" the country.

"This country has a tradition of great leaders. Every time this country has faced a big challenge, our leaders have stepped up to lead," Ford said. "I've seen some fundamental failures during my 10 years in Congress. We've forgotten that ideology is not a substitute for practicality and results."

Ford said the country's failure to develop an energy policy that moves away from foreign oil has damaged the economy and helped strengthen U.S. enemies in the Middle East. The U.S. should pursue alternative fuels and place more emphasis on coal and nuclear power, he said.
