As Democrat Jack Carter stood outside the Las Vegas union hall Tuesday where a rally would be held in support of his candidacy for the U.S. Senate, he said the night's featured speaker, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, was every bit as important to America as singer Bob Dylan.
"They're both American art forms," he said. "You have to check in on them every so often to see what they have to say. When I think of Jesse, I think of Dylan. They do have a way with words."
The crowd that filled the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees hall off Eastern Avenue and Chandler Avenue wasn't blowin' away in the wind.
Soon after Jackson began speaking, the 100 men and women on hand, who were largely attired in Titus for Governor T-shirts, were chanting along with the civil rights activist: "We are a better people than our government. We as a people deserve better. This land is our land."
As much as the crowd, which included the Democratic candidate for governor, state Sen. Dina Titus, loved Jackson's Baptist preacher speaking rhythm, they were largely reluctant to do what he wanted: Give $100 to the Carter campaign. Many did give smaller sums, but Jackson jokingly warned: "Do not give food stamps. That's against the law."
Carter, the 58-year-old son of former President Carter and a Nevada resident since 2002, acknowledged before the fundraiser that Republican Sen. John Ensign enjoys both a sizeable lead in fundraising and at the polls.
