Trying to turn the U.S. Senate race back to the issues, U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, who lives in Hoboken, yesterday said more public investment is needed for embryonic stem cell research, and noted that Republican challenger Tom Kean Jr. has voted six times against the issue.
Kean's spokeswoman countered that the GOP state senator does support stem cell research, but has voted against earmarking money to build research facilities.
Meanwhile, as Kean campaigned in Bergen County, a Republican assemblyman held a news conference to harp on the issue central to the GOP's attack plan so far: Menendez's ethics.
In turn, Menendez's campaign director blasted Kean for "backing out" of an Oct. 14 debate, and for going to disgraced former Hudson County Executive Robert Janiszewski for campaign tips.
The flurry of accusations and counterclaims come as the November election approaches. Kean, the son and namesake of the popular former governor, and Menendez, a former longtime congressman appointed to the Senate by the governor, are running very close in recent polls.
GOP Assemblyman Guy Gregg, of Flanders, took up the corruption mantra against Menendez. Gregg said Menendez should return $150,000 in campaign contributions given to him since 1987 by 18 convicted felons, including apparel industry trucker Frank J. Walsh, who has donated to both Kean and Menendez.
