Democratic U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman holds a wide lead over his Republican challenger in his bid for a fifth term, according to a poll.
The survey of 664 registered voters statewide who said they were likely to vote found 65 percent of them would cast ballots for Bingaman in the Nov. 7 general election.
Allen McCulloch, the GOP candidate, was supported by 19 percent, and 18 percent were undecided or said they did not know who they would vote for.
The campaign is McCulloch's first in the New Mexico political arena.
"There's no name recognition there," said Lonna Atkeson, a University of New Mexico political science professor.
The poll was commissioned by the Albuquerque Journal, which reported the results in a copyright story Tuesday.
The telephone survey, conducted Sept. 25-28 by Research & Polling Inc. of Albuquerque, has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
