Tennessee's race for the U.S. Senate is a dead heat between Republican Bob Corker and Democrat Harold Ford Jr., according to a Middle Tennessee State University poll released Tuesday.

The MTSU telephone survey showed 43 percent of the 549 Tennesseans polled supported Corker and 42 percent backing Ford. The poll was conducted Sept. 19-30 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Sixteen percent of voters were still undecided.

This poll is in line with the findings of a Mason-Dixon survey released over the weekend that put Ford, a congressman from Memphis, at 43 percent and Corker, former mayor of Chattanooga, at 42 percent.

Independent polling that pitted Corker and Ford against one another before the Aug. 3 primary showed Corker with a 13-point lead.

The election will determine who fills the seat now held by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and could be crucial in determining whether Democrats gain a majority in the Senate.

Corker shook up his campaign Friday by naming Tom Ingram, chief of staff for U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, as his new campaign chairman, forcing former campaign chairman Ben Mitchell out of a job. The campaign also opened an office in Nashville besides its Chattanooga office.
